It’s a great first or last rig. Many features that will keep you satisfied for a long time. Plus the price is great!
Someone should offer an aftermarket knob that is a bit bigger and ‘weightier’.
For the price, used around 500-600, it sure offers the casual DXer/Operator a lot. Wish the knob was bigger too.
They must have, as I don’t have this internal noise issue; I bought the radio about two months ago, and, by looking at the S/N, it was made this September…

Wow, those knobs are very small, makes me wonder how long they will last for someone who tends to have control knob ocd.
Yaesu has supposively fixed this internal noise issue, so the receiver should be very, very quiet with the newer model numbers.
Hello folks,
I have owned the Kenwood TS520S, TS 450SAT, 940SAT, TS 850…This is a much better radio. I like it. For ~$660 US, this is the best bang for your buck!

Yes correct and now it’s almost half as much.
1100 was Canadian, not u$.

Looks great to me. Wouldn’t mind getting one myself. I currently own Two Yaesu (VX-150) and am ready to buy a FT-1802M next week. I will wait for the FT-450 to get used a little more and hear a few more reviews before making the investment. Initially, though, it looks good enough to try.
Yaesu now has a $250 off coupon for this rig! You can find it on the net for just about 600 bucks. A bargain! The IF-DSP is amazing too for an inexpensive rig.
This is a SUPERB HF/6 rig, and an incredible value, considering the 250 dollar off coupon Yaesu currently is offering (630 bucks online)! My local radio club here in Chicago lent me one, and it hears VERY well, with a great display. I will be purchasing one come spring or summer!
The 897 has 2m and 70cm in addition to HF and 6m. If you don’t use or need the added VHF/UHF bands, i’d say go for the FT-450. It is a more current design, and i’ve heard the DSP works quite well for a rig in this price range. I myself am shopping around for a rig, but am taking my time for now.
I know the tuning knob is small, but does it have any heft or weight to it when turning it? Or does it feel light and cheap like the FRG-100 shortwave receiver?
Really! For me it works great for CW.
To each their own :O)
tnx but in not good for cw…. sorry…
I owned an Ft-897 and now I don’t. The FT-897 is a good radio but I hated shifting through all the menus. The FT-897 of course has HF 2m and 6m where-as the FT-450 has HF and 6m. It is a toss-up on the two. For a base station rig I like the FT-450 better.
This is just my opinion.
Would you take this radio over the FT-897D ? Im a new ham and trying to determine what one to get.

Yaesy ft 450 looks nice god rig
Thanks for the video review. I still have a Yaesu FT 900C/AT which I will probably hold onto. For the price this radio appears to be a great deal, however, from the reviews I have seen on Eham they seemed to overlook alot of features that they should have incorporated into this radio.
Great radio for the price. Lots of fun to use and has a small footprint.
