Well…….. a tough question. This is a hobby. You could spend a little bit of money and enjoy thoroughly or spend a huge amount and still be unsatisfied.
This hobby requires a licence from the Government of your Country. The licencing process takes about USD 50/- [in most countries]. License fees costs from about USD 5/- per year to USD 20/- per year.
You can build equipment from scratch using available [in most parts of the world] components and technical assistance of other fellow amateur radio guys. This could cost you anything about USD 150/- upto the maximum limit you are willing to put.
A good commercially available equipment is generally available for under USD 1000/-
