Software defined radio is a radio system that uses software devices as opposed to the typical hardware devices. The implementation is done on computer systems and involves devices such as amplifiers, mixers, modulators, detectors, mixers and so on. Rapid developments in computing systems and digital electronics have made it possible to use software to achieve capabilities in radio systems that were previously only possible through hardware components.

By using ham radio transceivers, one is able to convert his/her personal computer into a software defined radio without the use of external transceivers and antennas. The ability of ham radio transceivers to combine digital communication aspects and conventional air transmission has made it possible to convert PCs into high performance radio systems.

A basic software defined radio as set up on a personal computer will have a sound card and an RF front-end device. Earlier versions of ham radio transceivers used analog to digital converters. Signal processing occurs through the PC processor instead of through normal radio hardware. This makes it possible for the radio to receive and transmit different waveforms and protocols depending on the software used. This is also the particular reason that software defined radios are widely used in cell phone services and the military, as they can capture different radio protocols and wave forms in real time.

Connecting ham radio transceivers to a PC is fun and exciting. Basic electrical and IT skills are sufficient to handle this job. All you need are a few components and the appropriate software. By following these steps, you should be able to connect your ham radio transceiver to your PC without a problem.

1. Connect your PCs sound input with the radio’s headphone output jack. You need to use an isolation transformer. Connecting the transformer cord will trigger a display message on the monitor asking for decoding of the digital software installed. Run the software.

2. To get a radio signal over the air, connect a 100-1 divider with a transformer and patch cords between the sound card output jack and the radio microphone input jack. This will trigger a connection between the computer and the radio.

3. As the radio begins working, adjust the sound card to your preferred output level. Start with the point where it responds, then move to maximum and finally to your preferred level. Tune the radio, now from your computer monitor, adjusting the sound card until the red line fades. Using the mixer control applications on the OS, make the adjustments you need to sound levels.

4. Set your radio manually to transmit and read incoming signals from your keyboard. Alternatively, turn on the system’s voice operated transmitter, VOX to automatically receive and send signals as you link with other digital stations.

The word ‘ham’ as used in software defined radios typically means amateur. By following the above-mentioned guidelines, anyone can have a software defined radio working in no time.

Ham radio transceivers in the 21st Centaury

An amateur radio is called a Ham radio in some cases, and the operator is called as an amateur radio operator. They pursue radio operation and electronics as a hobby, and it is a vastly popular hobby at that using ham radio transceivers.

The origin of the word “ham” for an amateur radio operator is rather interesting. “Ham” was used to mean anybody who was NOT efficient or talented in the field. In the early days, the amateur operators had a notorious reputation for sending in garbled Morse code. So, these amateur operators were called by many names including “ham” as opposed to the professional wireless operators. But, over time, the name stuck up for the amateur radio operators and now it is no longer used in its initial derogatory way.

The hobby of amateur radio operators was also of public service during many times. In 1920 Amateur Police Radio was instituted to help “relay” information on crimes and thefts of vehicles and was very successful and also in the war years hams played a role. Apart from using ham radio to connect to friends, families, they also connect to complete strangers. The ham operators have time and again been of great service during emergencies and disasters like earth quakes and other natural disasters, Bush fires in transmitting reliable real time information about the condition and for the speedy movement and dispersal of the relief measures. This is a great public service since during these emergencies the only thing that works is the radio! The phone lines severed, other communication methods are ruled out and it is common for even the mobile networks to be clogged in traffic during these emergencies leaving hams as a great tool. There have been many documented evidence of the ham radio enthusiasts helping someone in trouble or helping to locate and nab a criminal.

Thus, the first radio hobby started out as amateur radio operation. It was restricted to few miles and must be relayed across. Now, all powerful and advanced radio equipments are still evolving and improving. So, one does not need to rely on relay anymore but can almost connect to half way across the world as opposed to the initial days.

The amateur radio has become very organized since the first clubs of 1909. Each has a unique identifiable code by which they are known. The first hobbyists relied on communication by making connections to as many radio operators who were as distant as possible, with their ham radio transceivers equipment. Usually they were constantly upgrading it. This was called Dxing, when one would try to connect to as many amateur radio operators as possible. The radio enthusiasts are on the look out for constant updates and most are proficient in the wireless technology. Even though they now get ready-made ham equipments, most are known to have a good knowledge of the working of the ham equipment as well as minor repairs and such.

In the day of the mobiles, internet, and blue-tooth, ham radio has its own place and reputation. After all, the disasters and emergencies have themselves to be a special place that the radio transmission can come in handy. There is also the family radio service, also known as the Walkie Talkie to operate within around about 2-3 miles. A modification of the same is used when the parents can fix a transmitter to a child’s bag or pocket, and when the child walks out of the range, the parents are sent an alarm! As you can see, radio usage is not just limited to hobbies, but it spans across many different useful purposes.

Ham Radio – Passion for Communication

Ham radio has a long and important history. As society and technology continue to move on to new things, a small segment continues to enjoy the hobby as well as to educate and help during disasters.

WHAT IS HAM RADIO?

Ham radio is the the term coined for amateur radio enthusiasts who learn to operate radios as a hobby or for practical use. Hams – as operators are called – can use various methods for transmitting messages including Morse code via telegraph, voice transmission via radio or messages through a computer. New methods of transmitting television allow for images to be received around the world by hams. Some hams have contributed to the development of new technologies for other uses.

The term ‘ham’ has unknown origin although there are several theories.

WHO USES HAM RADIO?

Ham radio operators can be anyone – doctors, homemakers, truck drivers – who enjoys communicating with new friends. Hams can talk across town or around the world.

Ham radio was used by the military in the World Wars and by ships. The well known ‘SOS’ is just one of the codes that operators use to relay messages to one another.

In emergencies ham radio operators volunteer to assist with transmitting messages when normal communications are unavailable.

So far, we’ve uncovered some interesting facts about ham radio. You may decide that the following information is even more interesting.

Hams are all over the world – even in space! While in orbit or on the space station astronauts have spoken with other operators as well as children, teachers and parents. The program is called ARISS, Amateur Radio on the International Space Station.

Hams are young and old, men and women and of every background and occupation.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO START?

In the United States you must obtain a license from the FCC (Federal Communications Commission).

To be licensed by the FCC you must pass an exam. The exam is administered by a volunteer ham operator and you are then mailed your license. You can often find websites or groups where you can locate a tutor who will answer questions or offer instruction before you take your exam. One such resource is the ARRL website. The ARRL is the National Association for Amateur Radio and provides training and resources for getting started as well as updates and news for the ham radio community.

HOW MANY HAMS ARE THERE?

The ARRL site claims over 170,000 members. FCC licenses have been issued to over 600,000 individuals in the United States and there are over 3,000,000 hams in Japan and many more throughout the world according to statistics found at ah0a-Site.

With so many people to talk to, there are even competitions to see how far away you can transmit and many other events within the community.

The day will come when you can use something you read about here to have a beneficial impact. Then you’ll be glad you took the time to learn more about ham radio.

Ham Radio Operation – Fun Hobby For Radio Control Enthusiasts

Amateur Radio or Ham radio is a hobby that radio control enthusiasts enjoy. It is a hobby and a service that uses radio communication equipment to communicate with other ham radio operators. Ham radio operation is a hobby that requires a license to operate. The first step to indulge in the hobby is to get a good ham radio device. It is better to take the advice and guidance of a person having the knowledge of ham radios whenever you wish to purchase the device. You should also be aware of the technical details and the local laws prevalent in respect of ham operations.

If you want to pursue ham radio operation as a hobby, you first need to get to know all about it. The Internet is a good source of information and will provide you with whatever you want to know. Other sources of information is reading through the books available on the subject or talking to other ham operators who can provide you with the insights on the subject. However, if you have no idea at all about ham operation but find yourself fascinated by it, then you need to learn about some of the technical jargon. Just a fascination or a wish cannot sustain a hobby. If you are indeed serious about ham radio operation as a hobby, you have to spend the time and effort to get to know about it and work towards your goal.

Ham operation is sometimes tiring, in spite of the modern equipment and it may be quite taxing to find communications from other radio operators. However, you are rewarded for your efforts because you can interact with other people, communicate with them and if the occasion calls for, provide emergency or disaster communication to help your community.

The selection of the ham radio equipment will depend greatly on how seriously you take your hobby and how much you are willing to invest in it. Reasonably priced ham radio equipment is available at stores dealing with it. It is advisable to speak to other ham operators, also visit the stores, and physically check out the equipment before buying. Radio equipment that can connect with long distances will cost much more than those that have a less range. The advanced equipment like digital voice transmission will be much more expensive than the simpler Morse code wireless telegraph models.

The next hurdle for a ham radio operator is to obtain a license to operate. Morse code proficiency is no longer needed for the amateur radio operator license exam. It was excluded at the World Radio Communication Conference held at Geneva in 2003. However, the test includes the knowledge of ham etiquette and knowledge of international communication laws. Once you receive the license, you are free to operate your ham radio within the allotted bandwidth. You are also allowed to modify or change the equipment within the specified limits.

The world of technology is changing society rapidly. Visiting stores, banks, and calling to order pizza are now nearly things of the past. All of these activities can very quickly and conveniently be completed online through websites. However, with this increase in virtual work comes a greater increase in identity theft. Most sites ask for personal information such as your name, address, phone number, credit card numbers, and even social security numbers. Once your identity is taken, many troublesome issues can arise. In addition to the loss of money, hackers can also damage your computer through viruses. This in return can lead to the need for pc repair tools, such as anti-virus software and spyware protection to clean your computer from harmful programs.

In most cases, a well-known site may be trusted. However, at any point in time an outside third party may be trying to gain access to the information that you think you are giving to someone else. Once your information falls into the wrong hands, your identity is stolen and your computer is subject to failure. While home pc repair programs often charge a fee, they can be well worth the cost.

Install Anti-Virus Software and Spyware Protection Programs

Numerous types of anti-virus software can be found to help protect your computer from worms and such. Websites offer memberships that guard and scan your computer as you surf the web. Some companies offer lesser free versions of their products. Ensure that these products are kept up to date and that you install all of the recommend updates as these are suggested. Scan your computer frequently and adhere to any pop up warning suggesting that you do not visit a site.

Run Firewall

A firewall will examine the traffic that goes between your computer and the sites you access. It only allows sites that meet your certain criteria. Many disable firewall due to the lack of access to some content. However, it is much better to be safe than sorry when it comes to protecting your identity online.

Be Email Cautious

Never open emails that are from addresses in which you are not familiar. Trojans and worms can come through opening emails. Never be tempted to open a suspicious email. Always delete it immediately. Consider viewing email messages in plain text, which often gives more protection.

Keep Up to Date on Latest Hoax

The Internet is full of hoaxes that lead to the need for home pc repair. Not all hackers are out to steal your identity; some simply want to crash your computer. Take warnings and messages related to viruses and worms that can cause computer damage.

Completing transactions online can be a very easy and convenient way to carry out business. However, if not protected it can also lead to much headache and trouble. Being familiar with pc repair tools and how to carry out home pc repair when necessary.

Do it Yourself Home Security Systems

The one place in the world you should feel safe is in your own home, but with the current statistics on burglary that safe feeling is getting hard to come by. According to the FBI crime, statistics page the most accurate data thus far is from 2008 and they reported over 2 million burglaries for that year, of which 70% were home burglaries. That is a good deal of breaking and entering, and if you live in an upscale neighborhood, you can bet your home could become a target. That is not to sound arrogant or discriminatory, it is simple math. A burglar is not going to waste time and risk imprisonment to break into a home where there may or may not be anything valuable.

So what is a homeowner to do? You could pay thousands of dollars for professional home security systems to be installed but in this economy who has that lying around? More and more people are turning to the do it yourself home security systems option. You can purchase a kit for a few hundred dollars, install it yourself and sleep better tonight knowing you have more protection than you did this morning. But what if you are not skilled at messing with wiring? In fact, most municipalities require you to hire an electrician for any electrical work in your home. In this case, you could go with a wireless burglar alarm system and install it yourself.

What is in a Kit?

Wireless burglar alarm systems will vary from one manufacturer to the next, but you should receive several window alarms, a programmable keypad, instructions and an auxiliary power component. Some kits will include devices that will alert you to phone line interruption, fire warning and more. Basically a do it yourself home alarm system should accomplish three things, alert you to an intruder, make enough noise to possibly scare the intruder away and place a call to a third party for help.

Downside

There are some do it yourself home security kits, especially wireless burglar alarm systems will be equipped with two sided tape to affix alarms to windows and doors. This tape over time will become weak and brittle, which could interfere with performance. To overcome this some systems will allow you the alternative of using screws instead.

A few wireless burglar alarm systems have instructions that leave a great deal to be desired. The systems themselves work fine, if you can figure out how to install them! One particular system that falls into this category is the AAS 500 do it yourself home security systems. All the reviews are glowing when it comes to performance but they also all complain about the obscure instructions.

Conclusion

Protecting home and family is the number one priority for a homeowner. Crime rates may fluctuate and vary from place to place but why take a chance with your loved ones and valuables? Wireless burglar alarm systems are simple to install and very economical as well. When you are ready to go the distance to protect your property check out one of the many do it yourself home security systems.
